The following is my tribute to Muhammad Ali , for such an inspiring example of a champion of great heart and life it is hard to do him justice, but from my heart this is how I see him.

I fell in love with the essence of Muhammad Ali several years ago after reading his book The Soul of a butterfly  . I found this book gave me a far deeper insight in to Muhammad Ali and the depth of his soul and life purpose. It contains much of his own personal insights and experiences as well as some of his poetry, it's one I highly recommend reading.

He truly was an amazing person who lived from the heart in all that he did, right to the end.

10 Reasons Muhammad Ali was the Greatest.

I am the greatest

  1. He knew he could create his own path - It is well known how Muhammad Ali could often predict the outcome of his fights in the form of his poetry and witty quotes. This is truly astounding and a great example of the power of belief.
  2. He lived from the heart - Above all what stands out for me about Muhammad Ali was his love for god and people. He would put this first because he knew its profound importance and truth in relevance to what is material.
  3. He fought with purpose - Muhammad Ali fought with great purpose,  he knew he had to become successful so that people would listen to what he had to say and so he fought his way to the top where people would listen.
  4. He fought for equality - Growing up in a time where racism in America was extreme and the slave trade was not that far behind him fighting just to be treated fairly was a daily battle and one in which it seemed hard to see an end. Reading Muhammad Ali's accounts of some of the racism he experienced it is heart wrenching and shocking  to hear how people were treated based on skin colour not that long ago. Muhammad Ali being the greatest champion he was, fought all this with the greatest composure and purpose I have ever heard of, truly admirable.
  5. He always admitted his own mistakes and forgave others - A mark of a truly great and spiritually driven person is the ability to do this. To see beyond the surface and understand that we all make mistakes and be able to forgive both ourselves and others for this. His ability to see in this way he puts down to his faith, where he always knew that the truly great is god and in that he is the only judge.
  6. He wouldn't compromise on his values - Because of his strong faith and values this took precedence in his life and he would not compromise them for anything, even his boxing title and career. When asked to fight in war he refused based on his beliefs and values risking even being sent to prison, he was then stripped of his title and boxing career for some time.
  7. He knew success was based on the ability to rise after falling - Muhammad Ali knew that success wasn't just based on titles and fame but on what your represent as a person and on the ability to rise after falling. This shows his true strength of character and determination.
  8. He had great perseverance - Another of his most admirable traits was that of his great perseverance, Muhammad Ali was able to fight for what he believed in overcoming all obstacles in his way, not only that but then using those obstacles to demonstrate his truth and purpose even more.
  9. He used his success for the advantage of all - Believing so strongly in equal rights and understanding the power of being in a successful position, Muhammad Ali knew that being successful was the greatest way for people to listen to what he had to say and so he made it happen!
  10. His power of Faith- Basing his life on his faith Muhammad Ali understood it's true power. Living from this place he was able to triumph over all obstacles with the greatest spirit and heart.

Staying Inspired and Motivated

How do you stay inspired and motivated to achieve your goals, is this something you find relatively easy or hard to do?

I would love to hear some of your own experiences and feed back on this. Some people we know may appear to be super motivated and never lose their passion. However most of us may go through some ups and downs no matter how important the goal may be.

So how do we maintain our focus and stay motivated and inspired?

Here are my 5 top tips;

  1. Know your outcome - When you know your outcome and stay focused on it so long as this is aligned well with your values it will pull you forward and enable you to overcome anything that gets in your way.
  2. Set up short term goal posts - If your goal is quiet big then it can appear overwhelming to achieve, particularly in the beginning, a good way to overcome this is to set up short term goal posts such as weekly,monthly and quarterly targets that you'd like to achieve. By doing this your goal becomes far easier to achieve as you build on each small goal.
  3. Surround yourself with the right people - Jim Rohn stated, you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, and the reason for this because of the power of influence. Those we are around consistently influence us and this can be either positively or negatively. To stay motivated and inspired, surround yourself with people who motivate and inspire you.
  4. Read motivational and inspirational material aligned with your goal- Reading material that supports your goal helps you to stay on track by giving you great ideas, as well as inspiring and motivating you to continue on your journey towards your goals.
  5. Have a great coach/ mentor - Having a great coach/mentor is the single best way to stay  motivated and inspired. This is because a coach can see those blind spots and because of this is able to push you in those areas that you may have otherwise missed or avoided, therefore limiting your progress. A coach is also there to offer you all the encouragement and inspiration you may need so you will never become stuck.

How to use your mind to improve your health

Your mind is one of the most powerful resources you have to improve your health, although we are often taught to focus purely on the physical; to exercise more, eat healthier and so on.

This is not to say the  physical elements are not of importance, but that our minds are in fact the greatest and most important tools that we have to begin and continue improving our health. With the power of our minds we can create, change and achieve anything we wish to. Our minds direct the functions of our bodies both consciously and subconsciously and all we need do is take control, to know we are the ones in charge and then apply the greatest tool that we have to our advantage.

The very thing that is often missed is the importance of our mind in improving our health and that we have to start here for the best results.

For example; if we do not believe we can overcome something what are the chances of us doing so?

Not very likely is the honest answer, sadly this is where so many start out when beginning a goal to achieve their best health and then soon give up when not meeting their set expectations.

So how do we cultivate a strong enough belief and ensure we are using our mind to the best of our ability to achieve our health goals?

Here are a few top tips;

    1. Set yourself a goal that you know is possible in the short term – setting a short-term goal is a good way of building your belief system so to begin with focus on what you know you can achieve today and then the week and month. Before you know it you have then built to a larger goal and gained a new belief.
    2. Tell yourself it is possible – Whether we realise it or not we have for most of the time an ongoing internal dialogue. Are you are aware of what goes on with yours? One way of checking in is on how you are feeling? If you are feeling low then the chances are your internal dialogue is negative. If you’re feeling great then it’s likely positive. The great thing is that you are in complete control of this and in changing it for where you want to be. A great way to do this is through the use of affirmations.
    3. Visualise– Our bodies respond to what our minds perceive so when we focus within our own minds, our bodies will respond as if it were true. Visualise yourself being at your best and enjoying being healthy and do it so often that you will know it and believe it to be true.

These approaches are open to and subject to much scepticism but the best way to know as with anything is to apply it. Put it to the test and see the results for yourself.

Keeping a Gratitude Diary

Having started a new gratitude journal this year and doing so with my son, I wanted to share with you all today the benefits that you can  get from this activity, not just for yourself but for your whole family.

Too often and particularly at this time of year we can become very focused on the future , which can be healthy but not when  forgetting the importance of the present moment and in being grateful of all we already have. It is important for us to be aware of this  because becoming too future focused can potentially lead to stress if we feel we are not meeting all the demands we set for ourselves. This is where gratitude comes in. 

For complete health and happiness gratitude needs to become a daily and consistent focus for us. By doing this we become more present and appreciative of what we already have. The combination of gratitude and goal setting is actually how we achieve our ultimate state of being and living in flow. To understand more on  this please check out this great video below with Vishen Lakhiani on the concept of Flow.

When we are very forward focusing people we have to be wary of falling in to the stress trap of becoming too results focused and instead remember to focus on flow.  When we are in this state, it is one of the most beautiful states to be in,  gratitude is what helps to bring us back to this state. Gratitude will also work for you if you find your mind slips in to the past a lot and you become focused on what is missing in this way. By bringing your focus on to gratitude you will  automatically become present and the more you do this the better you will consistently feel.

Stress and anxiety are caused by over-thinking the future and what you feel you have to do, low mood on the other hand is caused by overthinking the past.  By bringing your focus here and now and on to all you have to be grateful for, you will begin to find yourself more at peace. Peace through presence is what naturally comes through being in the present moment and  practicing gratitude is one of the quickest way possible to do this.

In just over two weeks of keeping our gratitude diaries I am noticing great benefits already for me and my son, being more here and now and therefore happier in this moment and what could really be more important than this?

The Joy of Progress

Today is day 30 of my 30 day blogging challenge and I have to say  it has been very enjoyable  although a challenge too. Most specifically, this time the challenge for me was timing.  It's amazing how a lot of things can come up when you set yourself a challenge, although the joy of progress at the end of it is highly worth it.

It doesn't matter what the progress is, as long as progress is made, we will always feel the benefit. Sometimes progress takes longer than we'd like it to or may come in ways we least expect. Like the last time I took part in this challenge and got a broken wrist challenge instead :)

The best thing about any challenge however is when you reach the end and come out the other side looking at the progress you've made, there aren't many joys that are greater than this. We can often have set goals and then end up achieving far more than we ever thought we could or making progress in an area we never intended too. This is an added part of the joy of progress; because of following paths we haven't before, we end up finding treasures we would not have otherwise.

As were coming up to new year my recommendation anyone wanting to experience the joy of progress would be to take on and embrace any challenge that you can. It is never too early to begin,  in fact the best time to begin is always now. Goal setting and making progress is always something that needs to be consistent so it becomes a habit and not just for new year. If we allow it to become a habit then we are always moving forward and improving in every way we can.

5 Ways to Stay Healthier over Christmas

As we are all getting more in to the festive spirit I thought now would be a good opportunity to offer some advice on how to stay healthy over Christmas. Many of us will of course want to indulge a bit which is good in moderation too and also well deserved. However there are also ways in which we can maintain our focus on health and so avoid having to make up for too much over-indulgence.

Healthy Christmas

Here are 5 ways to stay healthier over Christmas;

  1. Maintain your fitness routine as much as possible - by maintaining our fitness routine right up to Christmas, we ensure that our metabolic rate stays high and we will then burn more calories over the Christmas period. Even on Christmas day/ boxing day you could get the whole family involved in a fun festive fitness session.
  2. Focus on the benefits of being with family and friends - Christmas is a time where we can spend quality time with family and friends which we may not often get the chance to do. When we focus on all the value of this and let go of any tension that may be there, we can then enjoy each others company in a way that really benefits our whole wellbeing.
  3. Plenty of fruits, vegetables and nuts -  Christmas is actually a time where there is an abundance of these foods available to us. This means that if we are wise about our choices we can actually increase our intake of essential vitamins and minerals as well as having some treats too
  4. The joy of giving - I really believe this is the true spirit of Christmas and that giving doesn't have to be in monetary value. It can be in time, support or any other form of contribution you are able to give. When we become focused on this side of  Christmas instead it becomes more warming and connected and less about the materialistic side , which can sometimes cloud the original spirit of Christmas.
  5. Taking time for you - For some of you Christmas may be the one time you really get to take time out from work and other demands. Use this time if you can to really take some personal time for you to relax and reflect on the past year and on how you benefit from all you have learnt. Give to you as well as others.

Overall Christmas can be a beautiful time but like many things it is our perception that gives us the best outcome. By choosing to focus on all that is good and how you can help and benefit others in this time, you also help yourself in improving your own wellbeing.

If like myself you find the consumerist side of Christmas a bit much, then you can choose not to focus on this. Instead you can choose to focus on helping others and all that is good and giving around Christmas time. It is the same with maintaining your health and fitness at this time, if you focus on ways you can maintain your health and increase your intake  of good nutrition, in addition to treating yourself, then any effects of over indulgence can be minimised and you won't have to work extra hard in the new year to burn it all off :)

Being Yourself Completely

How do we really know when we're are being ourselves and what does this look like for us? Being yourself completely is entirely subjective and only you will really know, although when you are others will pick up on it too. However the most important pointer I can give on this is how different you will feel when completely being yourself vs not doing so.

When you are being yourself completely in every way, it is freeing and without limits, you do not think of what others judgements about you  may be, you express yourself wholly and completely and in doing so free yourself and become completely present.

Although initially others close to you may object to you doing so, you are actually serving both them and you in your example of living without limits and truly expressing who you are. This can be a journey in itself and a daily practice of reminding yourself that you are important and worthy enough to completely be yourself and contribute all you have to give to the world, but it is worth every effort in doing so.

Without you being completely who you are in every way, everyone you know and will know in the future misses out on all of who you are and all that you have to contribute, which as the unique individual that you are is so much. To stay confined for fear of judgements or doubts that you are enough, is to waste your life and to not experience the flow of being true to you and everyone around you.

Don't allow yourself to miss out on this, no amount of fear or doubt is worth this limitation in your life and the right people will always be there when you are completely you, they will not only embrace you as you are but be encouraged to do the same too. Never allow others judgements to bring you down, because unknowingly in doing this the cycle continues.

Be bold and be you,  do what you love and express who you are completely , I promise you in doing so it will be worth all the effort in the world. Nothing or no-one is worth limiting yourself for, as long as you are doing so from a place of love and presence you will always be doing your best, and love, without exception always  includes yourself. Find the courage no matter what and you'll always find a way to follow the path that is yours and then many more benefits will open up before you.

The Art of Being Present

Can you think  of a time where you felt really present, completely there in the moment? To me this is the ultimate state, the art of being present, the state of being  in complete flow. When we are in states such as this, everything we do flows much  easier as we express ourselves freely without limitation. As Ekhart Tolle states;

"When you lose touch with your inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world."

By allowing ourselves to be in the state of presence more often we can become healthier and happier with ease. When we are truly present, all tension is let go of and fear and worry do not exist.

The next time you do find yourself becoming fearful or stressed; try simply bringing yourself back to now, feel the presence of your body, focus on what you can see and hear. Find yourself absorbing everything and simply noticing what is here and now. By doing so you will quickly regain your focus and clarity of mind, this simple exercise allows you to really be here and now completely  and the longer we can maintain this state the better for our overall health and wellbeing.

You may have some activities in your life that have this effect consistently on you already, I personally find that exercise is great for this. Try if you can to have more of these activities within your day and week and see the benefits you will gain from doing so.
