The following is my tribute to Muhammad Ali , for such an inspiring example of a champion of great heart and life it is hard to do him justice, but from my heart this is how I see him.

I fell in love with the essence of Muhammad Ali several years ago after reading his book The Soul of a butterfly  . I found this book gave me a far deeper insight in to Muhammad Ali and the depth of his soul and life purpose. It contains much of his own personal insights and experiences as well as some of his poetry, it's one I highly recommend reading.

He truly was an amazing person who lived from the heart in all that he did, right to the end.

I am the greatest

  1. He knew he could create his own path - It is well known how Muhammad Ali could often predict the outcome of his fights in the form of his poetry and witty quotes. This is truly astounding and a great example of the power of belief.
  2. He lived from the heart - Above all what stands out for me about Muhammad Ali was his love for god and people. He would put this first because he knew its profound importance and truth in relevance to what is material.
  3. He fought with purpose - Muhammad Ali fought with great purpose,  he knew he had to become successful so that people would listen to what he had to say and so he fought his way to the top where people would listen.
  4. He fought for equality - Growing up in a time where racism in America was extreme and the slave trade was not that far behind him fighting just to be treated fairly was a daily battle and one in which it seemed hard to see an end. Reading Muhammad Ali's accounts of some of the racism he experienced it is heart wrenching and shocking  to hear how people were treated based on skin colour not that long ago. Muhammad Ali being the greatest champion he was, fought all this with the greatest composure and purpose I have ever heard of, truly admirable.
  5. He always admitted his own mistakes and forgave others - A mark of a truly great and spiritually driven person is the ability to do this. To see beyond the surface and understand that we all make mistakes and be able to forgive both ourselves and others for this. His ability to see in this way he puts down to his faith, where he always knew that the truly great is god and in that he is the only judge.
  6. He wouldn't compromise on his values - Because of his strong faith and values this took precedence in his life and he would not compromise them for anything, even his boxing title and career. When asked to fight in war he refused based on his beliefs and values risking even being sent to prison, he was then stripped of his title and boxing career for some time.
  7. He knew success was based on the ability to rise after falling - Muhammad Ali knew that success wasn't just based on titles and fame but on what your represent as a person and on the ability to rise after falling. This shows his true strength of character and determination.
  8. He had great perseverance - Another of his most admirable traits was that of his great perseverance, Muhammad Ali was able to fight for what he believed in overcoming all obstacles in his way, not only that but then using those obstacles to demonstrate his truth and purpose even more.
  9. He used his success for the advantage of all - Believing so strongly in equal rights and understanding the power of being in a successful position, Muhammad Ali knew that being successful was the greatest way for people to listen to what he had to say and so he made it happen!
  10. His power of Faith- Basing his life on his faith Muhammad Ali understood it's true power. Living from this place he was able to triumph over all obstacles with the greatest spirit and heart.

5 reasons to love the gym

Since the first day I ever stepped in a gym I instantly loved it,  I also know however that this is not a very common response. Because many of you may struggle to get motivated for the gym, today I wanted to share with you some aspects of the gym that can help turn you in to a gym lover too. I hope these can inspire an improvement in motivation for any of you who may need it.

For each gym lover their reasons may slightly differ, but I know for sure that  when enough positivity is connected to the gym it is possible that absolutely anyone can fall in love with it.

Here are my top five reasons to why;

  1. Feel Great - Many of the goals you set for yourself can take a while to achieve, but with this one you can achieve each and every session. Without doubt if you put some effort in even for only a half an hour you will feel far better for it and ultimately what we all want is to feel great.
  2. Make great connections - The gym can also be a great place to meet people and socialise, especially with likeminded people who are focused on achieving their health and fitness goals. Many gyms also have social activities and gatherings too.
  3. All you need in one place - From great machines, to classes, music and PT's, you have all you need within the gym to motivate you, no excuses. All you have to do is get there. :)
  4. A positive environment - A gym is overall a very positive environment, everyone there is working towards a goal and motivated towards improving themselves and their health. A really great place to be to lift yourself up whenever you need to.
  5. Time for you - We can often spend much of our time doing stuff for others and being there for others, whether at work or at home, so to take time for ourselves is very important. What better way to do this than to work on improving your health and fitness and feeling great for it? :)

The Joy of Progress

Today is day 30 of my 30 day blogging challenge and I have to say  it has been very enjoyable  although a challenge too. Most specifically, this time the challenge for me was timing.  It's amazing how a lot of things can come up when you set yourself a challenge, although the joy of progress at the end of it is highly worth it.

It doesn't matter what the progress is, as long as progress is made, we will always feel the benefit. Sometimes progress takes longer than we'd like it to or may come in ways we least expect. Like the last time I took part in this challenge and got a broken wrist challenge instead :)

The best thing about any challenge however is when you reach the end and come out the other side looking at the progress you've made, there aren't many joys that are greater than this. We can often have set goals and then end up achieving far more than we ever thought we could or making progress in an area we never intended too. This is an added part of the joy of progress; because of following paths we haven't before, we end up finding treasures we would not have otherwise.

As were coming up to new year my recommendation anyone wanting to experience the joy of progress would be to take on and embrace any challenge that you can. It is never too early to begin,  in fact the best time to begin is always now. Goal setting and making progress is always something that needs to be consistent so it becomes a habit and not just for new year. If we allow it to become a habit then we are always moving forward and improving in every way we can.

Moving beyond your comfort zone

move beyond your comfort zone

Do you dare to dream..? Moving beyond your comfort zone is a prerequisite to achieving anything beyond where we currently are. It is about growing and becoming in to that person you really want to be in order to reach your full potential. This is never about rejecting or not being happy with who or where you are,  but it is about loving yourself enough to know that your capabilities and potential exist far beyond where you currently are.

We are always able to achieve more yet so many of us do not fulfil our full potential or even reach for it either out of fear, or lack of belief and action. However by taking small steps to stretch ourselves consistently we can move beyond our comfort zone and begin to achieve what we may have previously thought impossible.

I like to relate the process we go through when training in the gym with the process of moving beyond our comfort zone, it is essentially the same process, which goes something like this;

 1.) Starting point - Comfort zone= (Boredom)

2.) Begin to push beyond/ stretch yourself =(discomfort)

3.) Then move to  - Growth zone = (Pleasure)

The 2nd two steps are often seen as the same but I see it as one leads to the other, as in the example of gym training.  It begins when we start going to the gym (we have a new goal), so we need to push beyond our comfort zone and start taking new actions. When we do this we naturally begin to experience some growing pains or discomfort because it is out of our normal range. This is the point where we need to see this instead as part of the pleasure of moving forward. We then experience the pleasure of doing so.

As in the gym any growth requires us to move beyond what we are currently used to and every time we do and begin to stretch ourselves we not only become closer to our goal but also gain the pleasure from growing and becoming more.  When stepping out of our comfort zone to grow and become although it takes more effort it is also highly rewarding and worth all the effort.

Personal Goal Setting

Personal goal setting is something very important for all of us that can help to keep us focused and moving forward in your lives. Empowering Belief Systems

We all have goals or things we would like to achieve in life but the question is do we really believe them to be possible, and if not why not?  What if we knew that no matter what we want to achieve that it is possible and without doubt we  can make it happen? What if you could choose empowering belief systems that support every goal or decision you ever make?

When you choose or create empowering beliefs to support your goals, the certainty created within you allows for the journey to become much easier as you seek out opportunities and all that supports your new empowering beliefs. As Buddha Stated;

'It is with our thoughts that we create our world'

Ultimately this transmits in to our belief system. Without a belief that supports the achievement of your goal(s) the journey can appear far more difficult or you may not even attempt it at all if your beliefs are very self-defeating.

The great thing is we don't have to accept the belief systems we have had up until now. We can choose our belief systems, so that they do become ones that support our goals and dreams.

How can you know what your current belief system is?

To discover your current belief system in any area just takes a little bit of self reflection,  you can do this by looking at any area in your life and the results you currently have.  In addition to this the actions that you are taking, you can then begin to determine your belief system around it. You may already be very aware of the belief system you have in certain areas but perhaps not know how to change it or have thought it possible to do so.

Changing your current belief system

Changing your current belief system can sometimes be as simple as making the decision to change it, once you have become conscious of your self-defeating belief you are in  a good position to do so. When you make this choice  as long as you back it up with consistent action to create evidence for your new belief, then you will successfully change it, choosing empowering belief systems can really be this simple. If however your past limiting belief system goes a little deeper and has more background attached to it, it can be a little more complex to change. This is where having a coach or facilitator can really make a difference.

There are specific techniques within the field of coaching that facilitate this process so that you become so aligned with your new belief that the effects come almost immediately. When I first discovered this it was a real life changer for me, I had always known the power of belief but knowing that it is literally possible to achieve anything and that you can align yourself to support this in every way opens up a whole new world for you.

There is no reason why any of us should choose to accept limiting beliefs or limiting lives for ourselves and once we realise we have been doing this, for our own happiness it is then our choice and responsibility to change it. The only thing that can stop us is ourselves.

How to track fitness progress

Knowing how to track fitness progress is essential for making our fitness goals manageable and achievable. Many of you may already be following a health and fitness plan or exercising regularly but how can you be sure your making the right progress or are you measuring at all?

It is common to fall short on this, which means we can miss out on the vital changes we need to make or on knowing when to make them. Keeping track of our progress can be simple, it is also essential for staying motivated and progressing at the correct rate.

Without doing this a few things can happen; either we stay stuck where we are for a long time and become bored, or we not sure of our current levels so overdo it too quickly.

One of the easiest ways to ensure this doesn't happen and  you are progressing at the correct rate is to get your own trainer.

Other methods to adequately track progress are;

  • Keeping a workout plan; The gym always recommend these for good reason, so that we can track and record our progress each week, then we are able to see clear consistent progress. With a good trainer, your programme will also be updated regularly.
  • Keeping your own workout diary; This requires some personal health and fitness knowledge at a good enough level to know what it is you need to do. If you are at this level then keeping a workout diary can really help add motivation and momentum to your training once you see that you are consistently advancing and improving.
  • Fitness apps; There are also many fitness apps now available that are designed to help you record and track your progress.

If you are tracking your own progress, some important things to be aware of are;

  1. Don't overdo it - It's important to push beyond our comfort zone but when we don't know our limits or have a tendency to go too far, we can overdo it. Then we can end up setting ourselves back through either injuring ourselves or purely going too far. The best way forward is through gradual progress, always listen to your body.
  2. Know what your looking for- Know what your measuring and how your doing this i.e. by the distance you cover each week or by improvement in technique for your sport. There are many things you can measure by, which will all depend on your goal.
  3. Have a measuring system -  if you are planning your own workout, be sure to set yourself target points of where you expect to be by the end of each month, this way you can accurately track how much you need to adapt in order to reach your overall target
  4. Reward yourself - Be sure to reward yourself regularly when you do make progress. Celebrate in anyway you can - one that of course doesn't hamper all your hard earned progress :)
